i did gymnastics for 6 years its extremely physically demanding but its not a sport lmfao
IDK, if bowling is a sport then I feel like it’s pretty much a free for all on that category at this point
in bowling you are competing in a particular physical activity on a specific criteria with a goal to be achieved - knock down pins with ball, score points. anybody who trained could become a good bowler. gymnastics requires that you not only have a certain body type but that you start young enough that your body actually ceases to develop at a certain point. judges score based on a system of mostly arbitrary standards and ~artistry and any points you do or do not get is completely at the whim of the judges and they can and do knock off points on massively difficult maneuvers for inconsequential reasons, sometimes costing gymnasts podium positions.
gymnastics is not a sport lol
Huh. That’s a good point. I did gymnastics when I was very young but stopped long before puberty when those issues emerge. I also bowl with my family on a pretty regularly basis, so my comment was moreso based in the comparative ease of bowling as well as the lack of athleticism required.
Sorry to butt in but I feel like if something is primarily judged rather than timed or based on points scored against an opponent its not a sport. Gymnastics requires a huge amount of athleticism, training, and talent but how well you do is based on the judge’s opinion. I ride horses (and work with high schoolers who ride) and while I consider the whole activity vaguely a “sport,” I do not consider every horseback disciple a sport. Polo, barrel racing, roping, etc. I would because you are either directly competing against another team, or being timed and winning based on that. Dressage, western pleasure, etc. I don’t because it’s a performance based on a judge’s opinion of how well you meet criteria. Just my two cents
I would agree with this, I don’t have any experience in competitive horseback riding and wasn’t gonna make that call but I agree with the rationale and don’t think cheerleading (or similar events) are sports for the same reason. Roller derby counts tho imo
