are mental health professionals just handing out diagnoses like halloween candy or are people self-diagnosing? i've seen so many people claiming to have [insert mental illness here] and [insert mental illness here] and [insert mental illness here] and i'm wondering how it's even possible. i've been in therapy for 6 years and was never diagnosed with anything besides anxiety, depression and ptsd, which is common. why are there so many 17 yr olds with bpd, autism and adhd all of a sudden?

well #1 unless things have changed since i was ~in the system any teenager telling you they’re diagnosed borderline is almost certainly lying. its uncommon to be diagnosed with a personality disorder as a minor in general unless its extreme, and even then, usually you’ll be diagnosed PDNOS. this is based on personal experience tho so dont take it as gospel

as far as the rest of it goes, i think theres been a significant uptick in self diagnosis, and consequently, people walking into a psych office with a particular diagnosis in mind already. so both i guess
